I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally share the before & after home tour of our main living areas! This home tour has been a long time coming. We started renovating our home 2 1/2 years ago – I can’t believe it’s been that long! If you’d like a refresher, you can read about the renovation here, here and here.
Home Tour
Our home was built in 1996, and we’re the original owners. You can tell the house was built in the 90’s by all of the orange trim and cabinets! It really needed updating!
2 1/2 years ago, we hired a contractor and his crew to do a lot of the main work. The 6 week time frame to finish turned into 4 1/2 LONG months.
They re-did all of the new flooring, counter tops, new light fixtures, faucets and tore out our old brick fireplace and put in a new gas fireplace and surround.
I also hired someone to paint all of the trim around our windows, cabinet doors and 6 panel doors.
Then I painted all of the trim in the house, with some help from my daughter and husband. I wrote a couple of posts about painting trim before it’s installed, and how to paint baseboard trim that is on carpeting. We also painted the railing in our entry.
Then came the fun part – the decorating! It was great being able to pick out fabrics for myself, and then make the window treatments and pillows. It just took a while to get all of it done! I even attempted an ottoman – which was a first for me.
You can probably tell that I’m not afraid of color! I love high contrast pops of color, but I’ve kept all of the bones of the rooms (the hardwood floors, walls, counter tops and tile backsplash) neutral. That way if I ever want to change the colors, I can easily switch them out.
This home tour is going to include the main living areas of our home – the entry and living room, dining room and kitchen, and then the laundry room.
Here’s a rough sketch of our floor plan, so you can get an idea for the flow of the rooms.
I’ve already revealed the kitchen to you. It’s connected with the dining area, and I’ve included it in the video tour too.
I’ll do a second tour or the bedrooms and baths after they’re completed.
Soon, I’ll be sharing tutorials for a lot of the wall art, window treatments, furniture painting and more. So stay tuned!
Now on to the home tour! I’ve created a video tour of our main living areas that show the before, during and after of the renovation. I’ve also included pictures of the finished rooms below the video.
Entry
When you come in the front door, this address sign is on your left. It shows all of the addresses where we’ve lived since we were married in 1982, and highlights my favorite quote from Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Looking back towards our new front door. We painted the railing white to match the newly painted trim. The trim and railing color is Benjamin Moore’s White.
I painted the oak cabinet the same fun green that I painted the laundry room and pantry walls – Pittsburgh Paint’s Fern Glow.
Living Room
Our living room was transformed with new paint (Benjamin Moore’s Ballet White), painted trim and wood floors. The wood floors go all the way through the main living ares of our home.
The N sign I made out of our old deck boards and framed it with some leftover pieces of trim.
These shelves used to be a shelving unit to hold fabric books in my sewing studio. Some paint and crown molding really dressed it up!
Our old brick fireplace was replaced with this new fireplace. We never liked the brick that the builder used for the old fireplace, and really love the update!
New draperies, pillows and ottoman help to bring in the pops of color that I love!
Dining Area
Our dining area with new draperies, painted trim and re-stained/painted table and chairs.
The blessing sign I made to go over the dining area doorway. While I was growing up, this was the blessing we said before every meal.
I painted our oak china hutch white, and added the Fern Glow paint color to the back wall. I love how the white dishes show up against the green!
Kitchen
In the kitchen , all of the oak cabinets were painted white. The green stools are a fun pop of green against the white.
To tie the rooms together, I made the roman shade valance out of the same fabric that I used to make the ottoman and pillows in the living room.
In the kitchen looking back toward the dining are and living room. On the left is the microwave cabinet that I upcycled from our old TV cabinet.
Laundry Room
I love opening the doors to our laundry room and seeing the fresh green walls! (Pittsburgh Paint’s Fern Glow). We added cabinets above the washer and dryer, which are more functional than the on open shelf we had before.
I added the shelf above the washer and dryer, and made the Laundry Room sign.
Because I couldn’t resist, I had to add a couple of pictures of the grand kids on the side walls.
That’s the end of our home tour. Thank you for joining me!
