Today I thought I would tell you a little bit about my business, Newton Custom Interiors, and how it came to be.
Newton Custom Interiors
I think I have always loved creating things. My parents were both very creative too. My mom sewed most of our clothes, and her own. Once she re-upholstered one of our living room chairs, and I remember being very impressed that she knew how to do it! She also knit and crocheted many projects. My dad was a farmer, but he also was a talented carpenter. He remodeled our farmhouse room by room while I was growing up, and also built and refinished beautiful furniture.
This is my favorite picture of my parents. It was taken the day before their wedding.
I can remember when I was maybe five or six wanting sandals, and trying to make them out of cardboard and tape. (I know – I was a strange child!) Needless to say, I was not very successful in that venture, but it does show that I had the DIY mentality very young. Luckily I was more successful with sewing projects. My mom taught me, and my sisters, how to sew when we were young. First, we learned how to hand sew on pieces of scrap fabric, and then when we were a little older we learned how to sew using Mom’s sewing machine.
My love of interior design started young too. I loved to re-arrange my bedroom while growing up, and have always liked seeing other people’s homes. When I went to college I started out as a business major, but changed to interior design my sophomore year.
In 2000 I decided to combine my love of interior design and sewing, and started my drapery business, Custom Creations. In 2009 I changed the name of the business to Newton Custom Interiors because I wanted to have a website, and getting a URL for Custom Creations was next to impossible! Much too common of a name.
So, what is Newton Custom Interiors? It is a drapery/window treatment business. I design window treatments for my client’s windows, pick out fabrics for the designs, and sew the projects. I also make pillows, bedding, placemats and table runners – just about anything for the home that is made from fabric. I do draw the line at toilet seat covers though, and yes, I have been asked to make them! You can learn more about Newton Custom Interiors in Design Services.
After 13 years of being in this business, I still love designing window treatments, and working with beautiful fabrics and trims.
Please share your stories with me. I would love to hear what all of you are passionate about!
It’s great learning about what brought others to this point. Love that photo–such a raw moment captured on film.
I too have loved decorating since I was a child. I used to repurpose common items to create homes for my Barbie dolls, LOL. Once I got older, I dove into rearranging my bedroom and helping friends with theirs. Looking back on these things recently served as confirmation for me to change my career path from freelance artist to (aspiring) interior designer.
Best luck to you in all your endeavors!
Thanks for sharing your story Angela! I really do love to hear how people came to be where they are in life now.
Much luck on your new endeavors. I will check out your blog too!
