Sewing For Beginners

I feel very fortunate that my mom taught my sisters and I how to sew when we were very young.  She sewed all of our clothes, and her own too.

I liked sewing clothes when I was younger, but it wasn’t until after I was married and I started sewing pillows, valances and curtains for our home, that I really fell in love with sewing.  Eventually, I started sewing pillows, valances, bedding and draperies for clients when I opened my home decor business in 2000.

Sadly, sewing is becoming a dying art.  It used to be  more of a necessity than it is today.   Women were expected to sew all of  their family’s clothing.  Only the very rich could afford tailors to make their clothes.  Nowadays, ready-made clothes are inexpensive, and fewer and fewer people are learning how to sew.

Sewing can be a great hobby and creative outlet.  There’s nothing like the feeling of accomplishment you get when you take a piece of fabric…

and turn it into something that is beautiful or practical.

That’s why I created this sewing for beginners tutorial!

It’s not hard to learn how to sew, but if you’ve never done it before, it may seem a little daunting.  Just take it step-by-step, and soon you will be sewing all kinds of projects.

Once you learn the basic sewing techniques, you’ll be able to create items for your home and gifts for friends and family.

I’m a visual learner, so in case you are too, I’ve created a detailed video tutorial to help you learn how to sew:

  1. Great that you are offering this, sewing is a wonderful thing to learn as young as you can!. I ended up teaching myself to sew in high school and loved it for years, moving from basic to a small kids clothing side business with embroidery embellishment and also handbags for the moms when my girls were very young. My hands hurt now, so I do not sew as much, but I did recently make drapes and pillows for my new farmhouse interior look. Your students will cherish this 🙂
